YA Lit

One of our goals at Vamos a Leer is to compile resources into one easy-to-find and accessible location.  We’ve tackled that objective here by developing an annotated bibliography of children’s literature related to Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latinos in the U.S.

Three unique resources have informed this list of titles: the Américas Award, which is given in recognition of U.S. literature that authentically and engagingly portrays Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the US; the Pura Belpré award, which is presented to a Latino/a writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino experience for children and youth; and the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award, which honors authors and illustrators who create literature that depicts the Mexican American experience.

See our Shelfari bookcase for an engaging way to explore the books listed in the bibliography.

Books by Country

We thought it would be useful to show readers where books take place throughout the Americas, and so the following map was born. In the process we learned that mapping literature can be difficult given that settings are often vague, referring to a region rather than a country (as in the Caribbean); protagonists travel, especially with books related to immigration; and not infrequently, the location only loosely evokes a place and is, in fact, wholly fictional. Thus we offer the following resource as a map of selective titles for children’s literature related to Latin America. Preview the map below or click into it to navigate with more detail.
