Book Giveaway: Enchanted Air: Two Cultures, Two Wings: A Memoir

Vamos a Leer | Book GiveawayWe’re giving away a copy of Enchanted Air: Two Cultures, Two Wings written by Margarita Engle–our featured novel for the March book group meeting!! Check out the following from Goodreads:

In this poetic memoir, Margarita Engle, the first Latina woman to receive a Newbery Honor, tells of growing up as a child of two cultures during the Cold War.

Margarita is a girl from two worlds. Her heart lies in Cuba, her mother’s tropical island country, a place so lush with vibrant life that it seems like a fairy tale kingdom. But most of the time she lives in Los Angeles, lonely in the noisy city and dreaming of the summers when she can take a plane through the enchanted air to her beloved island. Words and images are her constant companions, friendly and comforting when the children at school are not.

Then a revolution breaks out in Cuba. Margarita fears for her far-away family. When the hostility between Cuba and the United States erupts at the Bay of Pigs Invasion, Margarita’s worlds collide in the worst way possible. How can the two countries she loves hate each other so much? And will she ever get to visit her beautiful island again?

It looks like another interesting read–a great addition to any personal or classroom library. To be entered in the giveaway, just comment on any post on the blog by February 29.  Everyone who comments between January 26 and February 29 will be entered in the drawing.  If your name is chosen, we’ll email you ASAP about mailing the book to you.

Don’t forget, we also raffle off a copy of the following month’s featured novel at each book group meeting.  So if you’re an Albuquerque local, join us in March for a chance to win April’s featured book, Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge DanticatJoin us that evening to be entered.

    • Thanks so much for stopping by the blog, Amy! We really appreciate your kind words. We’ve got you entered in the giveaway for Engle’s memoir. If you haven’t read any of her other YA books, we highly recommend all of them. “Surrender Tree” was the first book by Engle that our book group read four years ago and we still talk about it.

  1. I’m curious to read more stories of dual worlds and cultures. It’s Australia Day today and the pangs of ‘home’ are felt from beneath the blizzard in NYC. Que cosas! Thanks so much for highlighting this book.

    • We hope you’re staying warm! I’ve seen some stunning photos of the snow in NYC–but I have a feeling the photos are far more enjoyable than the reality. Thanks so much for stopping by the blog. We’ve got you entered in the giveaway. I can’t wait to read this one myself. Good luck!

    • Hi, Jane! I’m really looking forward to reading this one as well. Engle is a favorite among our book group. I think we’ve read one of her books almost every year of our group. We couldn’t agree more about how important it is to read about other cultures and others’ experiences. Thanks for your comment. We’ve got you entered in the giveaway!

    • Hi, Linda! Thanks so much for stopping by the blog. We couldn’t agree more about the fabulous author! She’s really wonderful, isn’t she? So excited to read this one and her other new release Drum Dream Girl. We’ve got you entered in the giveaway. Good luck!

  3. I’ve heard so very much about Enchanted Air and would love an opportunity to gauge it’s personality for myself. Congratulations to Margarita for all of her recent book awards and considerations.
