Book Giveaway: Names on a Map

Vamos a Leer | Book GiveawayWe’re giving away a copy of Names on a Map written by Benjamin Alire Sáenz–our featured novel for the February book group meeting!! Check out the following from Goodreads:

The Espejo family of El Paso, Texas, is like so many others in America in 1967, trying to make sense of a rapidly escalating war they feel does not concern them. But when the eldest son, Gustavo, a complex and errant rebel, receives a certified letter ordering him to report to basic training, he chooses to flee instead to Mexico. Retreating back to the land of his grandfather—a foreign country to which he is no longer culturally connected—Gustavo sets into motion a series of events that will have catastrophic consequences on the fragile bonds holding the family together.

Told with raw power and searing bluntness, and filled with important themes as immediate as today’s headlines, Names on a Map is arguably the most important work to date of a major American literary artist.

It looks like another interesting read–a great addition to any personal library! To be entered in the giveaway, just comment on any post on the blog by January 25.  Everyone who comments between January 5 and January 25 will be entered in the drawing.  If your name is chosen, we’ll email you ASAP about mailing the book to you.

Don’t forget, we also raffle off a copy of the following month’s featured novel at each book group meeting.  So if you’re an Albuquerque local, join us for a chance to win!

Good luck!

  1. I have thoroughly enjoyed the other books by Alire-Sáenz and look forward to delving into the themes of this latest book. Alire-Sáenz creates such richly developed characters

  2. I’m getting ready to have students read “Sammy & Juliana In Hollywood”. You know I LOVE this author’s work! Please enter my name for the drawing.
I just started reading “Shadow Shaper” to kids – will let you know how it goes.

    • We would love to hear what your students think about Shadow Shaper! I’m so excited that you’re going to use Sammy & Juliana. It’s such a wonderful book. I’d say it’s my favorite, but I love all of his books. I can’t choose a favorite. We’ve got you entered in the giveaway. Hope you had a wonderful break!

    • Thank so much for commenting! You really can’t go wrong with one of Saenz’s books. I’ve loved every one that I’ve read. We’ve got you entered in the giveaway!

  3. Sounds like a great way to make a connection between history and current events! Looking forward to reading this one with my teen.

    • Hi Melissa! Thanks for stopping by the blog. We’ve got you entered in the giveaway. If you haven’t read any of Saenz’s other books, he’s got at least four that are specifically for young adults (but great reads for adults as well). Two of my favorites are “Sammy & Juliana in Hollywood” and “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.” If you get a chance to read any of his books we’d love to hear what you and/or your teen think!
